Presentation to Jack Mumford Jack Mumford is a 14 year old Student from Littlehampton Community. He and 29 other young people are going to Ethiopia in October for 10 days as volunteers at a school for disabled children. The children at the school are aged between 8 and 16. The expedition is being organised by the CRED foundation and Jack said that he was very surprised when he was chosen after the interviews. He has had to raise £1000 for the journey and has already raised £850 through many fund raising efforts such as cake sales and car boot sales. It was therefore with great pleasure that the Companions decided to award £200 to Jack. £100 of this is to go towards his expenses and the other £100 is to pay for items needed in Ethiopia. Jack talked to the Companions about his trip and showed great enthusiasm. On being asked about the food in Ethiopia Jack said that it was much like Italian so there would be no problem. He also said that the conditions they would be staying in would be very basic - no hot water etc. but he did not mind that as it would be an experience of a lifetime. As preparation for the expedition Jack has had to attend some training courses in Bournemouth covering such topics as face painting and how to run games. He has also had to endure several injections for such illnesses as Yellow Fever and Meningitis.
Presentation to Tamarisk Centre The Chairman, Tony Squires, presented a cheque to the Tamarisk Centre for some soft furnishings and also for some new telephones. Jennie Ririe, the Centre Co-ordinator, said the money was much appreciated. It was being used for two telephones with transfer buttons which were easy to use for the volunteers. The soft furnishings are to make the Centre feel more homely. Tony Squires said ‘It is great that the companions could help towards the smaller things to give a homely touch after the revamp of the centre.’ He praised the hard work that the centre staff and volunteers do to help the more senior members of our community.
